Spanish Painting in Portugal
The presence of Spanish painting in Portugal is a consequence of the cultural relations that existed between the two neighboring countries and materialized through collecting, through diplomatic offers, ecclesiastical sponsorship and, more recently, through acquisitions carried out by museums. and private and public institutions.
Having been at the origin of an important campaign to restore, investigate and enhance Spanish paintings, the exhibition, curated by Joaquim Oliveira Caetano, director of the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, and Benito Navarrete, professor of art history at the Complutense University, integrates the cultural activities of the Spanish Presidency of the European Union.
