Help the MNAA to restore the «Crib of the Marquises of Belas»
Purchased in 1937 by José de Figueiredo, the museum’s first director, this crib belonged at that time to Sebastião de Carvalho Daun e Lorena, a descendant of the Marquis of Pombal. It is known by the name of the “Crib of the Marquises of Belas”, probably because the work was directed by the sculptor Joaquim José de Barros, known as Barros Laborão, of whom the Marquis was a patron. But documents show that the crib was commissioned from Barros Laborão, in the late 18th century, by José Joaquim de Castro, a Lisbon collector, and that it never belonged to the Marquises of Belas. This crib is a transitional work, with features from the 18th century, but also displaying other details found in modern cribs. It is the largest crib in the MNAA collection and the only one yet to be restored. Because of its monumental size (358 x 422 x 162 cm), the conservation and restoration of this crib – involving the cleaning and consolidation of its over 100 polychrome clay figures, its background setting and the case in which it is housed – is a complex process.
With your contribution, however small, you can help us to raise the €40,000 needed to restore this crib.
