In his multifaceted graphic production, Domingos Sequeira (1768-1837) began to draw themes from Classical History, Literature and Mythology during the first years of his studies at the Academy in Rome (1788-1793). Influenced by the neoclassical atmosphere that pervaded Rome, Sequeira practised by drawing these themes on various occasions, continuing to do so for a brief period after his return to Portugal, albeit in a more diffuse way. These themes were to disappear from his work after 1810. In the year that marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of this central figure in Portuguese art, we present a selection of some of Domingos Sequeira's best drawings.
