IN MEMORY OF GAËTAN LAMPO MARTINS DE OLIVEIRA
A donation by Eduardo Ferreira Massano

Donated to the MNAA in 2020 by Eduardo Ferreira Massano, in fulfillment of the will and memory of Gaëtan Lampo Martins de Oliveira (1944-2019), these artworks belonged to the artist's collection, which has always been generously present at the National Museum of Ancient Art. Gaëtan's plastics, dominated by drawing, since the beginning of his artistic journey when he used paper as a modeling material, started from the direct observation of faces, bodies and objects until focusing on portraiture and self-representation. Theatre of gestures, the faces - his face - draw in quick, violent, subtle and imperceptible lines, are designed to hide death, as in each of the lines of the artworks he collected.
The Landscape with Knights, oil painting on canvas, by Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668), complements the representation of this Dutch landscape painter in the national collections. The Architectural sketch with fountain, a pen drawing on paper attributed to Giuseppe Galli Bibiena (1696-1757), enriches now the most important nucleus of drawings of the artist conserved in Portugal. The Archangel St Michael and the Angel Bust, two wooden sculptures linked to the sculptors' workshops in Northern Europe that strongly influenced the history of sculpture in Portugal in the 16th century, complete the significant core of the MNAA. The Flagellation of Christ, a notable bronze sculptural group based on the model of the Italian Alessandro Algardi (1598-1654), will feature exemplarily as a work of the first Roman Baroque in the unique set of European sculptures of the MNAA.
