Giovanni Antonio Canal IL CANALETTO
"The Grand Canal from the Campo San Vio"
Villa Vauban, Musée d’Art de la Ville de Luxembourg, Luxembourg
From Villa Vauban, the Musée d’Art de la Ville de Luxembourg, this view of the Grand Canal from Campo San Vio was one of Canaletto’s (Venice, October 7, 1697 – April 19, 1768) chosen perspectives of Venice; more than a dozen of his paintings from this point of view are known. The greatest of Venice’s artists of his time, Canaletto combined exact representations of Venice, shaped by its particular light, with the urban commotion of the movement of boats and groups of figures, all captured with precise and swift strokes.
