• A Taste For Allegory EUROPEAN DRAWINGS FROM THE 16TH TO 18TH CENTURIES

The symbolic representation of abstract realities was transformed into a complex system of analogies, metaphors and comparisons after the Renaissance. Ever more elaborate allegories, both profane and religious, reached their peak during the Baroque period. Aimed at an erudite audience, they were presented as intellectual entertainment which is why their meaning is sometimes difficult to interpret today.
This group of drawings from the mnaa collection presents beautiful examples from diverse artists and diverse periods, around the theme of allegory.
