• ANGELS Between heaven and earth

    European drawing 16th-18th centuries

As divine messengers charged with communicating between heaven and earth, the angels - spiritual beings without bodily substance, organised in hierarchical militias - have forever seduced and challenged the imagination of the artists. Their complex representations vary according to traditions and epochs; Humanism transformed them into graceful adolescents in long robes with splendid wings and this is how they came to be represented from the Renaissance period onwards, not only in religious contexts.
In this selection of European drawings belonging to the MNAA collection, the various graphic approaches highlight the creativity these beings exhorted.
