The Descent of Christ into Limbo

Vicente Carducho (Florence, c. 1576 – Madrid, 1638)
The Descent of Christ into Limbo

Coming from the Church of São Domingos in Benfica, the Descent of Christ into Limbo belongs to a series of paintings commissioned between 1624 and 1632 from Vicente Carducho, a painter of Florentine origin in the service of the Madrid court. On the occasion of the exhibition Shared Identities: Spanish Painting in Portugal, the three paintings that still remain in the Church were the subject of conservation and restoration work, which returned them to their original grandeur. Before returning to São Domingos de Benfica, the MNAA highlights this important testimony of the Portuguese order in Madrid, in times of the Iberian Union.
