The Colección Masaveu. Great Spanish Masters. Greco Zurbarán Goya Sorolla project, specially createdfor the MNAA, brings to Portugal a selection from the extraordinary collection gathered over the course of three generations by an eminent family within the economic fabric of Spain, that is also notable for its important cultural activity.
The set of 60 works exhibited here identifies key points in the history of Spanish painting from the 15th to the 20th century through its renowned protagonists. El Greco, Zurbarán, Goya and Sorolla are just four inevitable names along a journey that, from Gallego to Ribera and Murillo to Fortuny among many others, unfolds in a fascinating way over almost five centuries.
With particular focus on the so-called Siglo de Oro, the Masaveu Collection brings together pieces from the most notable art galleries in Spain, such as the royal collection, and the collection of Prince Sebastião Gabriel de Bourbon e Bragança, King João VI of Portugal’s grandson. The section dedicated to Joaquín Sorolla, with pieces covering all the subjects of the great painter of light’s work, is another of this collection’s strong points. Because of this, Sorolla occupies a special place in this exhibition.
