PORTUGUESE CRIB ROOM

The history of the Portuguese presépio (crib) is displayed in this room through a selection of works by renowned sculptors, from the fragments of 16th century baked clay figures to the grandiose cribs for Baroque convents and palaces. It highlights the production of Lisbon workshops in the 17th and 18th centuries. Between Classicism and Romanticism, nativity sculpted scenes introduced the pastoral genre to Portuguese art. It was characterised by the illusionist artifice of the compositions, the nature and architecture scenes, the Naturalism of the sculptured figures and portraits of society.
