Drawing inspired by the famous Transfiguration painted by Rafael, between 1518 and 1520, and commissioned for Narbonne Cathedral by Cardinal Giulio de´ Medici. Fernão Gomes, who became a royal painter in 1594, used the engraving that Cornelis Cort made (in 1573) from the work by Rafael.
The drawing is signed and dated. In the centre of the sheet, beneath the feet of Jesus is a text in Latin, which translates as follows: Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” (Acts of the Apostles, 2.11), a text that refers to the Ascension of Christ.
